Mississippi Prawns are considered an exotic species in the state, and thus a permit is required to culture these fish. Contact Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce at 601-354-6720 for information and details on obtaining an aquaculture permit, cost $100 annually. Alabama There are no exotic species permits in Alabama. The dept of DNR will let the aquaculture industry know which species are allowed. Currently, red claw crawfish, tilapia, and freshwater prawns are allowed. Tennessee There are no exotic species permits in TN. A permit from TWRA is required for everyone in the aquaculture business. The cost is about $20/yr and is good for an entire farm no matter how many ponds are on the property. Kentucky KY Dept of Fish and Wildlife resources controls permission to propagate exotic species. They will allow prawns and redclaw crawfish because they feel there is no potential for reproduction among escapees. A commercial fish propagation permit costs $100 in Kentucky and is renewed every year. Louisiana Prawns are on the domesticated species list, all that is required
is a fish farmers license for $16. The permit can be obtained
from the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, 225-765-2865. Currently, prawns are not covered by regulations for exotic species in Georgia. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources indicate that invertebrates are not fish and not "legally" covered in the statutes defining the exotic animal and exotic fish regulations. No permit is needed. Ohio The Ohio Aquaculture Association worked with Ohio Department of Natural Resources to get freshwater prawns added to the approved species list in January 2001. Since we were able to present proof of the prawns inability to reproduce in freshwater and the fact that it dies below 55F, it was put on the unresticted species list. These are species that the ODNR does not consider a threat to any native species of environments. For this you need a regular aquaculture permit which is $50.00 annually. Here is the link to Publication 61 which lists all the approved unrestricted species in Ohio http://www.ag.ohio-state.edu/~prec/aqua/qanda/pub611.pdf Illinois Aquaculture permits are required and are available for an annual fee of $50 from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
